Remote access & alerts

Watch your cameras from anywhere

Reach your hub away from home with Tailscale, with no port-forwarding and no router settings. The app switches between home and away automatically.

Updated 17 October 2026

At home, your phone talks to the hub over your Wi‑Fi. Away from home, Unicam uses Tailscale, a free private network between your own devices.

Set it up

  1. Install Tailscale on the hub computer (Mac, Windows, Raspberry Pi or NAS) and sign in.
  2. Install Tailscale on your phone and sign in to the same Tailscale account.
  3. Open Unicam. The hub detects Tailscale and shares its tailnet address with your paired devices.

That’s it. The app fails over automatically: on your home Wi‑Fi it uses the local address, and anywhere else it uses the Tailscale address. Live view, timeline, alerts’ snapshots and settings all work the same.

Why not port-forwarding?

Opening your hub or your cameras to the internet through your router exposes them to automated attacks. Camera botnets spread exactly this way. Unicam never asks you to do it, and you shouldn’t: never port-forward 7700 or your cameras’ RTSP ports.

Is it secure?

Tailscale connections are end-to-end encrypted between your devices. On top of that, every request to the hub needs a paired device token, and video links use 15-minute read-only tokens. Live video itself uses WebRTC, which is encrypted.

Watches away from home

Watches reach the hub through your phone’s connection or Wi‑Fi, so away from home they need the Tailscale address too. The phone hands it over automatically. See Watch apps.

Without Tailscale

Remote live view without Tailscale, through a relay, is coming soon. Until then, alerts still arrive anywhere as push notifications, but opening their snapshot or live view away from home needs Tailscale.

Still stuck? A person reads every request.
