Troubleshooting

Camera won't connect

What each of Unicam's camera connection messages means, from a wrong password or locked camera to streaming switched off or the wrong address, and how to fix it.

Updated 17 October 2026

Unicam tests every camera before saving it and tells you what actually went wrong, instead of “connection failed”. Find the message you saw.

“The camera refused that username or password”

The camera answered, but the login was wrong.

  • Use the camera’s own password, not your Wi‑Fi password or app login. See Which password does my camera want?
  • Tapo: the username is the Camera Account you created, not admin and not your TP‑Link ID.
  • Unicam shows how many tries are left before the camera locks itself. Stop and check before the last one.

“Too many wrong passwords, so the camera locked itself”

Many Dahua-based cameras (Imou, CP PLUS, Dahua, Amcrest) lock for 30 minutes after 5 wrong tries. Nothing is broken. Unicam shows when it unlocks; wait, then use the right password.

“The camera is on, but streaming to other apps is switched off”

The camera refused the connection. Switch local streaming on in its app:

  • Imou Life: camera → Settings → More → RTSP / ONVIF (or “Local access”).
  • Reolink: Settings → Network → Advanced → Port settings → RTSP.
  • Tapo: create a Camera Account; that switches streaming on.
  • EZVIZ: turn off Image encryption, and turn on local streaming if your model shows it.
  • EzyKam+ (CP PLUS): enable Local access / ONVIF if available.

“The password may be right, but the camera won’t share its video”

Same cause as above: streaming to other apps is off, or the model only streams to its own cloud. Some cloud-only EzyKam and EZVIZ models don’t offer local streaming at all.

“Nothing answered at that address”

  • The camera’s IP address may have changed. Run the scan again, or check your router’s list of devices. Giving the camera a fixed (reserved) address in your router prevents this.
  • The camera may be on a different network from the hub, such as a guest Wi‑Fi or a separate VLAN. Put them on the same network, or allow traffic between them.
  • Battery cameras sleep. Reolink battery cameras need a Reolink Home Hub to stream continuously.

Your model uses a different stream path. Choose Any ONVIF camera so the camera tells Unicam its links, or paste the exact link under RTSP / other URL.

The camera worked, then went offline

Check the camera’s health in the app (status, codec, bitrate). Wi‑Fi cameras far from the router drop out most; a wired camera or a closer access point fixes it. If the hub itself is offline, see Hub offline or storage problems.
